Structural color is a color formed by the interaction of light and micro-nano structures. It has the characteristics of high brightness and high saturation. If the microstructure that forms the structural color is not destroyed, the structural color will never fade. Developing structurally colored fibers and fabrics through structural color development methods is of great significance to reducing the pollution caused by traditional printing and dyeing.
Recently, a research team from East China Normal University used a spraying process to accurately assemble colloidal photonic crystals (PC) within each yarn of polyester (PET) fabrics. The prepared PC/PET fabrics have saturated and durable colors and good softness. performance and high breathability.
Researchers developed a two-step spraying process. PET fabric can be viewed as a hierarchical porous structure with large cracks between yarns and small gaps between fibers. When the SiO2 colloidal solution is sprayed for the first time, a thin liquid film is quickly formed on the surface of the PET fabric, and then the limited volume of the colloidal solution is completely absorbed into the porous yarn through capillary force. As the solvent evaporates during heating, the particles spontaneously precipitate to form liquid colloidal PC, which is then transformed into solid PC located between fibers. In the subsequent PA adhesive spraying, PA nanoparticles are also enriched on the surface of the SiO2 particle-filled PET yarn due to the same capillary interaction. When the sample is heated above the glass transition temperature and then cooled to room temperature, the PA nanoparticles melt, solidify, and wrap the PC structure and PET yarn, ultimately producing a colorful PC/PET fabric.
It has been proven that this spraying process can produce PC/PET fabrics with uniform, saturated and diverse structural colors. When the incident angle and reflection angle of light change from 0° to 30°, 45° and 60°, the reflection wavelength of the red PC modified fabric changes from 650 nm to 605 nm, 555nm and 503nm accordingly.
Durability test results show that when the fabric is washed in water or in a washing machine, its color remains unchanged. When modifying PC The structure of the fabric remains intact when subjected to more aggressive operations such as brushing and ultrasonic treatment. PC patterns of trees, flowers and deer can be easily created on this fabric.
