According to USDA data, from 2000/01 to 2021/22, Brazil’s cotton production has achieved leapfrog growth from 939,000 tons to 2.678 million tons. In addition to output, Brazilian cotton’s focus on quality has not diminished at all. In recent years, global development has paid more and more attention to the negative impact of agricultural production on the environment. Since 2005, the Brazilian Cotton Growers Association (ABRAPA) has launched an initiative to start the sustainable development of Brazilian cotton. In Brazil, more and more cotton farmers are turning to sustainable production standards for cotton cultivation. Brazilian cotton farmers have replaced 34% of chemical pesticides with biopesticides, and currently more than 84% of cotton has obtained BCI certification.
Over the past 20 years, Brazilian cotton exports have also grown rapidly. According to USDA data, Brazilian cotton exports have increased from 70,000 tons in 2000/01 to 1.72 million tons in 2021/22. ABRAPA has set an ambitious goal to surpass the United States and become the world’s largest cotton supplier by 2030.
