A hot day of 38 degrees Celsius.
Honghe Town, Xiuzhou District, Jiaxing.
Gao Xiaohua stood in front of the floor-to-ceiling window of the office and looked out. The roads in the town were covered with layers of white light under the scorching sun, which was a bit dazzling. Few people went out in such a hot weather. Gao Xiaohua looked at the time and still decided to go to an appointment.
Honghe Town is a nationally famous hometown of woolen sweaters. Gao Xiaohua also runs a sweater company with a history of nearly 30 years. Unlike the sweater bosses here, he founded his own men’s clothing brand in 1998.
At the Central Plaza in Jiaxing City, Shang Jia, general manager of Jiaxing New Fashion Ecological Textile Technology, has already made tea in the office. Two minutes later, Gao Xiaohua knocked on the office door. This is a reunion between two old friends who have not seen each other for ten years, but it is more than that.
Overcoming two major shortcomings and successfully applying for more than ten national patents in 8 years
Why did you think of developing corn fiber products? Shangjia summed it up in four words: “coincidence”. It turned out that a few years ago, Shangjia’s father suffered from senile skin itching. In order to relieve his father’s symptoms, while taking medication, he searched for ecologically non-allergenic fabrics and discovered corn fiber.
So Shangjia began to think: There are many people with allergies in life. Can this material be developed into clothes suitable for infants, young children, the elderly and other people?
Once you have the idea, it is not easy to implement it. In order to overcome the two “fatal flaws” of high temperature and hard feel when making clothes made from corn fiber. In the past few years, their company has carried out extensive cooperation with domestic scientific research institutions such as Donghua University, Suzhou University, and Zhejiang Science and Technology University. They have invested a lot of manpower and material resources in improving the softness and durability of fabrics, and have overcome a series of problems. Technical difficulties. Finally, after 8 years of dedicated research and development, new clothing products with more than ten national patents have begun to be launched on the market.
“The present invention relates to a pure polylactic acid fiber underwear fabric, which solves the problem that the polylactic acid fiber in the prior art cannot achieve 100% pure spinning. The pure polylactic acid fiber underwear fabric is woven with 100% pure polylactic acid fiber Made…” In Shangjia’s office, there are many such invention certificates, and just as many as the certificates are new products developed by the company using corn fiber.
The cost of “corn clothes” is only four to one-fifth of that of mulberry silk
“Now that corn fiber technology has matured, we can achieve 100% no additives.” Shangjia said that in addition to developing clothing, the company has applied corn fiber to socks, quilts, underwear and other home textiles and daily necessities.
“In addition to the environmental protection effects of being renewable and degradable, what are the advantages of corn fiber clothing compared with ordinary clothes?” Gao Xiaohua asked.
“Clothes made of corn fiber are moisture-wicking, easy to clean, have good drape, and are not easily deformed.” Shang Jia said that “corn clothes” are 3 to 4 times more sweat-absorbent than cotton clothes, but have the advantages of silk fabrics. Natural shine and drape. And compared to clothing produced from petroleum products, the colors are bright and pleasing to the eye. Because there is no special treatment during the production process, “corn clothing” does not generate static electricity, has no irritation to the skin, is soft and comfortable to wear, and can also resist ultraviolet rays.
In order to verify the breathability of corn fiber, Shangjia took off her sports shoes. “My corn fiber socks don’t smell strange even if I wear them for three or four days in a row.” Shang Jia said that the good stretchability of corn fiber makes the socks on his feet that have been worn for several years still feel as good as new when he takes them off. Deformation.
“Last year, we participated in the third China Corn Industry Expo, and the corn fiber socks on display were sold out on the first day.” Shangjia said proudly.
When talking about the material cost issue that Gao Xiaohua is concerned about, Shangjia said that the cost of corn fiber is slightly higher than that of pure cotton, so compared with ordinary cotton clothes, the cost of corn fiber clothes is higher than ordinary clothes, but only It is four to one-fifth of the cost of mulberry silk.
“We are the first and only company in China to produce 100% corn fiber clothing. Judging from the current product sales, I am quite optimistic about the prospects of corn fiber clothing.” After listening to Shang Jia’s introduction, Gao Xiaohua was a little excited . In his view, the development of traditional textile enterprises mainly lies in transformation and upgrading, embracing new technologies, and improving product added value and market competitiveness.
After the reunion of old friends, it was the commitment of the two companies to cooperate with each other. As Shangjia said, with the increasing awareness of global ecological environment, new ecological and recyclable fabrics will become more and more widely used.
Corn-made clothes are environmentally friendly and a highlight
After greeting each other and chatting about their ten years of experience,Shang Jia casually picked up a men’s white Polo collar T-shirt from the desk: “Look, this is made of corn fiber.”
The appearance is no different from ordinary T-shirts, but it feels slightly “rougher” than cotton clothes. Gao Xiaohua, who has been in the clothing business for decades, couldn’t help but become curious: “Can corn really be worn?”
Shang Jia said that corn can “make” fashionable and beautiful clothes because of the starch raw materials extracted from it. “This is a green and environmentally friendly polymer material called polylactic acid.”
Having dealt with clothing for many years, Gao Xiaohua has always had his own interpretation of clothing fabrics: cotton, wool, linen, silk, and man-made fibers have all been at the forefront, but they all have limitations. For example, although cotton clothing is comfortable to wear, it is not visually attractive to the eye; although silk is light and soft, it wrinkles easily; although linen is cool, it feels itchy; although chemical fiber is stiff, it is difficult to be skin-friendly. What to wear in the future is also a question that he has been thinking about and needs to solve urgently.
“The clothes I wear are all made of corn.” Shang Jia pointed to the yellow T-shirt she was wearing and said that the biggest feature of this “corn clothing” is that it is green and environmentally friendly. Shang Jia said: “Corn fiber clothing buried in the soil will be degraded within a few months and become fertilizer that can be absorbed and utilized by plants. After the fertilizer is absorbed by the plants, it can turn into polylactic acid through photosynthesis. The raw material is starch. In this repeated cycle, exhaust emissions are greatly reduced.”
According to Shangjia, polylactic acid fiber can be extracted from all starch-containing plants such as corn and cassava. Currently, only two companies in the United States and the Netherlands can produce raw materials for polylactic acid fiber. However, due to fear of high temperatures and hard feel, the application of this fiber in clothing, home textiles and other fields has been blank for more than ten years since its introduction.
