Recently, the Foshan Inspection and Quarantine Bureau detected a formaldehyde content of 187 mg/kg in a batch of imported denim shirts produced in Turkey, which is more than twice the maximum formaldehyde content limit of 75 mg/kg stipulated in Chinese standards for this type of product. There are 188 shirts in this batch, with a value of nearly 100,000 yuan. Currently, Foshan Inspection and Quarantine Bureau has implemented return disposal of this batch of clothing in accordance with the law.
Formaldehyde is a colorless gas with a strong odor that is easily soluble in water and is a toxic chemical. Formaldehyde-containing textile auxiliaries are widely used in the dyeing and finishing of clothing. They can achieve various effects such as anti-wrinkle, anti-shrinkage, flame retardant, improved hand feel, maintenance of printing and dyeing durability, etc. Although environmentally friendly formaldehyde-free textile auxiliaries have been developed, some companies still use a large number of formaldehyde-rich textile auxiliaries in the finishing of clothing in order to save costs.
The inspection and quarantine department reminds consumers that when purchasing textiles and clothing, especially when purchasing non-iron clothing and printed clothing, you can first smell whether there is any fishy or peculiar smell on the clothes. Newly purchased clothes should be washed before wearing to remove most formaldehyde residues on the clothes. When purchasing clothing, consumers should also pay attention to the quality of the physical goods. Don’t just look at the price, let alone be superstitious about imported goods or brands.
